Are you interested in weather and climate? In a time when weather and climate issues dominate the news and touch on many other disciplines, consider packaging your interest with a B.A. in Geography – the geographic skills of location, spatial analysis and human-environment interactions – which in addition to meteorology and climatology courses, offers courses on human culture, remote sensing, regional geography, map making, and research methods, among others.
The Meteorology & Climatology Concentration at SUNY Buffalo State is housed within the Department of Geography & Planning. Our Meteorology & Climatology Concentration serves as an alternative to the four-year meteorology degree, providing you with an opportunity to be a weather and climate specialist in the broadest sense. Our goal is to provide you with a sound background in meteorology and climatology, complemented by geography’s emphasis on interpreting and presenting spatial and temporal information and integrating information from multiple sources. While the principles and mechanics of atmosphere dynamics are taught and applied to weather forecasting, you will also apply your knowledge of weather and climate to different disciplines and to solving real world problems. Our approach to climatology provides you an understanding of global climate patterns and their significance, the skills to reconstruct past climates, and to address climate change issues.
Another option to consider is a Meteorology Minor. A recent reduction in Intellectual Foundation (IF) requirements opens up an opportunity to take one or more Minors along with your Major. In Geography, concentrations in ‘Watersheds and Ecosystems’ or ‘Geographic Information Systems (GIS)’ may be augmented with a Meteorology Minor. In other disciplines, natural pairings with the Meteorology Minor include: Anthropology, Biology, Communications, Earth Sciences, and Elementary Education. Another consideration is an Individualized Studies, B.S., where the Meteorology Minor may be combined with another minor of your choosing to create a B.A. program tailored to your interests.
Let us build on your fascination with weather – providing you with a degree in Geography (Concentration in Meteorology & Climatology) or a Meteorology Minor or Individualized Studies which will prepare you for a broad range of employment opportunities where you can apply your weather and climate knowledge, or more specifically, find employment as a private weather forecaster, broadcast meteorologist, or weather/climate consultant, or to prepare you for graduate study.
